Career Build helps to prepare high school students with barriers to employment for life after high school. Through an interagency agreement with Rogue Workforce Partnership and funding through WIOA and local foundation partners, Career Build offers academic and graduation support, employment skill development, and work experience opportunities. Requirements include being on track for high school graduation, being from a low income family, and having a barrier to employment. Students are offered support through mentoring around career exploration and college and training options.
Some of the special opportunities extended to your student if they qualify include:
- have a College & Career Specialist for mentoring, tutoring, and coaching
- explore careers that fit personal interests and career preferences
- strengthen resumes and applications for employment, college, and/or scholarships
- gain the work readiness and soft skills valued by local employers
- learn about higher education opportunities testing for National Career Readiness Certification
- visit colleges, community colleges, vocational programs
- learn from successful college students and adults who have exciting careers
- participate in unpaid or paid work experience related to career interests
- discover the family-wage employers and careers available in Southern Oregon
- attend career fairs, leadership camps, and pre-college programs
- earn special incentives, stipends, and scholarships
For the 2016-2017 School year:
- 80 youth were served.
- 92% earned their high school diploma or GED
- Career Build Graduates earned a total of $388,934 in financial aid and scholarships
- 32 youth participated in the Career Build Paid Work Experience Program
- Nearly 1000 students in Josephine and Jackson Counties earned their National Career Readiness Certificate
College Dreams operates our core middle and high school programs through our College Incentive Program. In 2011, College Dreams was able to expand our core programs in Josephine County through funding from the Federal TRIO/Talent Search Program. Youth enrolled in College Incentive or Talent Search may also be eligible for the IDA Program or Career Build.

A study of Dreamers and matched comparison students from the high school class of 2005 demonstrated that Dreamers were arrested 74% less often by the end of 10th grade, and dropped out of high school 62% less frequently by the end of 12th grade. Dreamers were more than twice as likely to be a member of the National Honor Society, and to be fully prepared for college admission. Dreamers received four times the amount of scholarship awards at their high school senior awards celebrations. Our alumni who enter college boast a six-year BA/BS completion rate of 80%, well above the national 55%-60% average for all students, and far above the 11% benchmark for low-income, first-generation students.
