I joined College Dreams in middle school and was in the first graduating class of Dreamers. When I first joined I didn’t know what I wanted to do after graduating from high school. College Dreams helped me find the right college once I decided I wanted to pursue a career in medicine. Most importantly I was able to visit several campuses that I was interested in and received a lot of help with my application that my family wasn’t able to provide. The scholarships that I accumulated throughout high school with the help of College Dreams also significantly decreased my debt burden, which I am extremely grateful for having now also completed my graduate program.
Since graduating from North Valley High School in 2005, I have graduated from Oregon State University with my Bachelors in Biology, completed a three month medical internship in South Africa, worked as a certified nursing assistant for two years, and graduated from Oregon Health and Science University with my Medical Doctor degree. In the last two years I have also volunteered with I Have a Dream Oregon, which provides mentoring and social support to K-12 kids in the Portland area with a personal goal of educating students of all ages about careers in medicine. I am now making the move from Portland to Seattle to complete my three year residency in Internal Medicine at Virginia Mason Medical Center. My goal is to become a hospitalist at an academic medical center so that I can provide mentoring to students and residents throughout my career.
