The mission of College Dreams is to increase access to opportunities, remove barriers and prepare low-income, first generation and underrepresented youth to thrive in school, college and careers.
College Dreams began in 1998 as a pilot substance abuse prevention program for 33 6th-grade students in Josephine County with multiple risk factors for school dropout and substance abuse. As the 6th-grade Dreamers progressed in grade levels, new cohorts of 6th-grade students were engaged and the geographic area served was expanded. The first graduating class of Dreamers was in 2005, and since that time 1,471 youth have become program alumni.
Today, College Dreams serves 1,177 students from 6th grade into post-secondary through partnerships with 20 secondary schools in Southern Oregon with a mission to increase access to opportunities, remove barriers and prepare low-income, first generation and underrepresented youth to thrive in school, college and careers. College Dreams uses resiliency development strategies that are personalized to meet the strengths, preferences, and challenges of each Dreamer. Our College & Career Preparation Specialists (CCPSs) provide long-term school outreach services year-round to build healthy relationships, establish a college-going peer culture, promote academic excellence, build key success skills, and facilitate interactive group activities from a grade-by-grade College & Career Preparation Curriculum.
The alumni who enter college boast a six-year BA/BS completion rate of 80%, well above the national 55%-60% average for all students, and far above the 11% benchmark for low-income, first-generation students.
